Jose Baez, the man who gained fame as a defense lawyer for Casey Anthony, will join Gary Giordano's defense team, the AP reports.

The Gaithersburg businessman is held in connection with the disappearance of Robyn Gardner, the North Bethesda woman who went missing Aug. 2 as the two were traveling together in Aruba. Giordano told authorities that Gardner was swept out to sea while snorkeling, but people close to Gardner have raised doubts about his story.

Giordano’s Aruban lawyer Michael Lopez told the AP that Baez was hired by Giordano's father, Frank. Baez can serve as an advisor to Giordano's defense team, but can't argue in court, Lopez told the AP.

Baez served as a defense lawyer for Anthony, the Florida woman accused of killing her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was acquitted of the murder charges in the high-profile case, but was convicted on several counts of lying to authorities.
