UPDATED: City Manager Angel Jones Resigns
Effective Friday, June 15, Gaithersburg's city manager of the past three-and-a-half years will step down.
Update (12:36 p.m., Friday, June 15): Gaithersburg mayor Sidney Katz and the city council met three times this year to evaluate Angel Jones' performance as city manager, most recently on Monday, June 11, according to a report by The Gazette.
Before a December meeting for Jones annual review, Katz "sent memos to the eight city department directors, all management level employees and 20 randomly selected full-time city employees to request a review on Jones’ performance," The Gazette reported.
The reviews were kept confidential and were seen only by Katz.
Update (11:35 a.m.): Gaithersburg mayor Sidney Katz said he believes the city will continue to operate seamlessly as the City Manager position is in a transition phase, but there is no timetable set to fill the role.
"We (the mayor and city council) have to meet and we'll have discussions on when this will all take place," Katz told Patch. "At this point, [Tony Tomasello] is certainly going to be able to be the Acting City Manager and I think most people will realize that this city will function in the way it has in the past."
When asked about Jones' resignation, Katz said the city does not comment on personnel matters. Tomasello told Patch he was "definitely" surprised to hear the news.
Tomasello has worked for the city of Gaithersburg in various roles for many years, Katz said, most recently serving as Deputy City Manager.
"He certainly is someone that knows the city extremely well, he knows the employees and he knows their system," Katz said.
Tomasello was hired in 1996 as the city's Economic Development Director and has served as Assistant City Manager/Deputy City Manager since 2001.

Effective Friday, June 15, the Gaithersburg city manager has resigned from employment with the city of Gaithersburg, according to a press release by the city. Jones had served in the role since September of 2008.
“It has been rewarding to serve the citizens of Gaithersburg and to work with so many talented and dedicated employees to implement [Gaithersburg's] strategic goals and objectives,” Jones said in a statement. “During my tenure much has been accomplished and, due to my guidance, I leave the city in a strong financial position.”
Gaithersburg mayor Sidney Katz and the city council named Deputy City Manager Tony Tomasello to serve as the Acting City Manager.
Katz said Jones is resigning to pursue other opportunities and praised her work during her three-and-a-half year tenure.
