Could New FBI Headquarters Come to Montgomery County?

What location in Gaithersburg would you pick?

In November 2012, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a search for real estate consultants to seek suitable locations to move the FBI’s headquarters from 935 Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest Washington to a more suburban location, including several in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Numerous locations have been mentioned for the federal law enforcement agency, according to a recent article in the Washington Business Journal.

The story cited a Washington Post report that the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority (WMATA )was considering offering the 78-acre site at the Greenbelt Metro Station.

In another Washington Post story, Montgomery County’s economic development director shared that Montgomery County is reviewing potential sites to lure the agency.

“Any jurisdiction which has the opportunity to have the FBI in it would be crazy not to figure out how to get the job done,” Steven A. Silverman, Montgomery’s economic development director, said in the article.

No specific locations in Montgomery County were mentioned, but any site must meet the following requirements:

  • Have approximately 2.1 million square feet
  • Be located on 40-55 acres
  • Be no more than two miles from a Metro stop
  • Be no further than 2.5 miles from the Beltway.

The Business Journal listed five potential locations for FBI headquarters: staying in the District (former Walter Reed location or St. Elizabeth’s campus), Prince George’s County’s Greenbelt Metro, Montgomery County, Fairfax County’s Franconia-Springfield Metro and Loudon County’s Antigone or Dulles West sites.

The Burning Tree Country Club.

After all, the FBI treats women well.

Ah, too bad the Montgomery Village (Shopping) Center doesn't fit the requirements. God knows they have never been able to maintain or utilize it for anything beneficial to Village residents. Hummm!

Or maybe Lake Forest Mall which is basically used as a 'Car Dealership'. FBI presence might certainly end or diminish that notorious crime area that is in the news EVERY WEEK for assaults and strong-armed robberies, ya think!

A win like this probably takes good advocacy on the part of the County's Congressional representative. Unfortunately - thanks to Governor O-Malley, Montgomery County is represented by four members of Congress, who's districts sprawl all over Maryland like Rohrshach blots - including my representative, who also represents my neighbors in Allegany County. We don't really have a Representative in Congress to advocate for the County - so the headquarters and jobs will probably go to Virginia.
