Crews Scramble to Contain Major Gas Leak

A dozen guests evacuated from Marriot Springhill Suites on Washingtonian Boulevard; none injured.

A major gas leak forced a dozen people to evacuate from a Gaithersburg hotel Monday afternoon as crews worked for more than two hours to contain a rupture in a 4-inch line near the Rio at Washingtonian.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue tweeted shortly before 4:30 p.m. that the leak occurred in the 9700 block of Washingtonian Boulevard, where a leak near other utility lines was allowing the gas to spread to nearby buildings.

No one was injured, according to an MCFRS spokesman. More than a dozen people were evacuated from the Marriot Springhill Suites hotel, WUSA9 reported.

MCFRS spokesman Scott Graham tweeted shortly before 6:30 p.m. that the repairs were “clearing soon.”
