Gazette: Avalon School Nixes Move to Clarksburg
The private school for boys will stay in Gaithersburg
Due to financial woes, The Avalon School will not move forward with plans to build a new campus in Clarksburg, school officials told The Gazette.
The Avalon School, a Catholic private school for boys, will continue to operate out of First Baptist Church of Gaithersburg.
In 2007, the school was granted a special exception to build on a 10-acre site on Frederick Road (Rt. 355). The site would have been composed of four buildings to accommodate 600 students, according to county planning records.
But a sharp drop in enrollment and the failure to secure a construction bond made it "impossible" to repay a $2.2 million loan, school president Richard McPherson reportedly told The Gazette.
Foreclosure proceedings were initiated in May 2011; properties were sold at auction for $1.2 million on March 23, 2012, The Gazette reports.

This article is a "re-print" from the Gazette? IS there a Gazette anymore? It's no longer delivered to my curb, e-mails to circulation@gazette.net aren't answered, it's no longer bulk-delivered to the Germantown Library. I thoguht the Gazette died.

Beverly, I'm on a rural road in Boyds, and my Gazette stopped being deiivered in late Nov. or early Dec. Yes, I've seen what appears to be rolled Gazettes in some peoples' yards in denser neighborhoods. Is this discrimination against rural residents, as if our money isn't as desirable to the Gaz's advertisers as is yours? And since Jan 1st, it astopped appearing in the Germantown Library.

This article is about how yet another school cannot expand due to financial woes in our failing economy NOT about how you are "discriminated" out of a FREE newspaper. Do what everyone else does read it online - that's what you do with the Patch.

It's a little hard to clip the coupons from an online edition. ;-)
