The top-seeded Gaithersburg High School Lady Trojans are one win away from returning to the state semifinals on their quest for a three-peat.
After nearly being upset Monday evening by No. 8 Wootton, Gaithersburg cruised to a 61-37 win over No. 5 Bethesda-Chevy Chase, earning a 4A West regional final matchup with No. 2 Whitman.
Gaithersburg junior guard Christine Mabry led all scorers with 17 — including five three-pointers — while junior Janessa Fauntroy finished with 16, The Gazette reported.
“As a team once we get relaxed, there are more opportunities to score,” Mabry told The Gazette. “Once we settled down we were ready to take advantage of our shots and that’s what happened tonight.”
Gaithersburg, 49-47 winners over Whitman in the two teams' only matchup this season, meets the Lady Vikings at 8 p.m. Friday at Paint Branch High School.
A win advances either team to the MPSSAA state semifinals, held on March 7 at 3 p.m. at UMBC's RAC Arena.
