Montgomery County GOP Chairman Responds to Romney Protest
Uncapher: County school bus drivers 'should be embarrassed.'
Montgomery County Republican Party Chairman Mark Uncapher responded to a protest of Mitt Romney by school bus drivers by asking if bus drivers were willing to accept responsibility for failing schools.
Uncapher made the comments in the Sept. 1 issue of the county GOP’s newsletter.
The “Chairman’s Message” focused on a Patch report about a protest on Thursday over comments made by the Republican presidential nominee about school bus drivers.
The drivers took issue with a message Romney has repeated on the campaign trail that bus drivers should not get credit when students make their school’s honor roll.
Drivers carried signs along Crabbs Branch Way in Rockville on Thursday as part of a protest organized by the union that represents county school bus drivers. They said Romney’s comments imply that bus drivers do not contribute to a child’s education and are offensive.
“Seriously, you cannot make this stuff up,” Uncapher wrote of the protest, before offering a link to the Patch article.
“I do not minimize the responsibility or professionalism of Montgomery County's school bus drivers,” Uncapher wrote. “However their [sic] trying to claim credit for whether individual students making the honor roll is simply silly. They frankly should be embarrassed for trying to make this argument. However SEIU does not embarrass easily.”
Uncapher asked if bus drivers serving high-performing schools are better than those serving lower-performing schools.
“If they want to take credit for kids making the honor roll, are they also will to accept responsibility for failing schools?” he wrote. “ … Are the bus drivers for the Walt Whitman, Walter Johnson and Churchill clusters that much better than those for Kennedy, Einstein and Wheaton? Probably not.”

Uncapher found the bus drivers' protest "simply silly," so why did he think it was worth comment? Apparently for a gratuitous anti-union swing. This penchant for small ball shows why he and his crowd are not playing in the big leagues.

OMG..there is nothing anti-union about it. Too bad the school bus drivers are permitting themselves and their honor to be used in such a ridiculously divisive whirlwind!

If he had paid attention they made no such argument.

"However SEIU does not embarrass easily" is not a gratuitous anti-union swipe?.

Romney figured he could take a cheap shot at the School Bus Drivers. However when the drivers stand up with their union all the sudden it becomes something different. Now its Romney just saying he wanted parents to praise their children for making the honor roll. If that's so why did he bring up the school bus drivers to begin with?

This has nothing to do with bus drivers, it only has to do with the manipulation of a blue collar workforce by their union.

Ddad99 is correct re: the unions. That's what they do. Manipulate members to enrich the pockets of the union leaders.
Romney was simply making a point. When kids make the honor roll, it is the kids and parents of those kids who deserve credit. Not the teachers, the bus drivers (the only group he mentioned) the cafeteria workers, the janitor, etc.
Granted, there is in every school at least one worker who might encourage a particular student, but credit for doing the work still lies with the student and parent. If not, then as a previous poster stated, those others must take blame for all who did NOT make the honor roll.
