Person Struck, Killed by CSX Train
Few details are available.
A person has been struck and killed by a CSX train in Gaithersburg, County Police said.
Police were called to the rail crossing on Chestnut Street at 1:22 this afternoon, Police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said.
Upon arrival, they found the person already deceased.
The train was traveling northbound toward Frederick and was carrying cargo, police said.
CSX train service has been suspended in the area while the investigation continues, and as of 3:30 this afternoon, the area between South Summit Street and Chestnut Street remained closed to traffic.
Cruz could not immediately confirm the person's age, gender and identity.
She also did not know if the person had intentionally placed themselves on the tracks or if the strike was an accident.
This is Gaithersburg's third major train strike and second fatality in 2011.
An 81-year-old preacher was struck and killed in January, and in February a man drove his car onto the same stretch of tracks in Olde Towne, but pulled his family to safety before a train struck his car.
