Poll: Will Supreme Court Decision Help Obama's Campaign?

Do you think President Obama's re-election efforts have been helped by court's ruling?

Much of Maryland is split on Thursday's Supreme Court ruling.

Some analysts felt President Barack Obama scored a huge win Thursday.

Some officials felt Republican challenger Mitt Romney will benefit from conservative momentum following the decision.

Either way, Thursday's Supreme Court ruling—one that upheld the individual mandate that requires the purchase of insurance as a tax—thrust health care to the top of the list of campaign topics heading toward November.

We want to hear from you.

Vote in our poll. Then tell us in the comments if Thursday's ruling has changed or cemented your vote this November.

5-4 indicates that Obama still does not get it. It's one thing to pay for ERs out of the general tax pocket. It's another to make me pay for the sick and deadbeats of this Country. The next President will probably nominate 2 or 3 justices to the Supreme Court. No matter how much I dislike Romney's threats to reverse the EPA victories I will vote for him if it means a better Supreme Court.

The Health Care plan specifically calls the individual mandate a penalty - not a tax. Who the hell is Justice Roberts to re-word that document just so he can vote for it. What was he given in order to do this? i think he needs to be investigated and we need a process to remove Justices that corrupt the system as he has.

The penalty was written in the ACA to be collected by the IRS..Justice Roberts did not change the law. He said it didn't fly under the commerce law but it was fair under congresses ability to tax. That said, it is not a tax on all middle class Americans as is now being shouted by opponents to the act. It taxes those who can afford health care insurance but choose not to buy it. For Americans who have insurance through their employer nothing will change for them--except protection that they cannot be dropped and annual/lifetime limits should they become seriously ill. For those who cannot afford insurance there is credit to help purchase it. Why is having health insurance seen as a bad thing?? Why is is different than being required to have car insurance even though (knock on wood) I haven't had an accident?

Ronald, you are spot on! It is a penalty not a tax. Judge Roberts WANTED (IMHO) to find a way to uphold the mandate. If it is a "tax" shouldn't I be able to write it off on my taxes each year if I am "penalized"?

There seems to be a popular misconception that Emergency Room care for people with no insurance is passed on to taxpayers. I have heard several people say this.

It is false. The hospitals eat this cost and pass it along to their paying customers (the insurance companies) who mark it up and pass it along to their customers.

Tom, Medicaid pays for much of that "free" care (at reduced rates). Medicaid is implemented by the states and federal government and their source of revenue is taxes and fees. That's us.

Dan, if it is a federal tax is not deductible on either your state or federal tax return.

As a matter of law and public policy, penalties and fines are not deductible as well.

Finally, all income is taxable unless the government specifically allows exclusion or specifically allows a deduction.

Bottom line, death and taxes .................

Sorry Gregg Roberts Sick and Deadbeats are paid for by Medicaid. This will fine the Middle Class/ small business person who has already PAID FOR THE POOR IN THEIR TAXES. Now that they don't have the money left for pay their own families insurance, they will be fined. This is what JUDGE ROBERTS did with his sophomoric and empirical opinion.

The Supreme Court decision will help President Obama. To the best of my knowledge, universal health care has been proposed since the beginning of the 20th century. This was Obama's landmark piece of legislation and now it has passed Constitutional muster.

Those opposed to President Obama would do well to put this behind them, and concentrate on the Deficit, Unemployment, Illegal Immigration/Illegal Immigrants, and other hot button issues.

Pound sand. I personally know folks in both Canada and Germany who are unfortunate victims of government phoney largess. You pay for nationalized care, and then if you actually need to see a doctor before 6 months away, pay cash. Doctors in these countries are happy to take cash. It becomes a two tier systems...those without cash sit in line and those with cash get excellent care. Read up and learn.

I was very disappointed that the bill was not overturned but now at the end of the day I have soaked it all in and I believe it galvanized not only the republican base but it created a new group of voters - "Romney Democrats."

Unlike what you democrats want to make yourselves believe the Tea Party is made up of all walks of the political and non political spectrum. Democrats and people that never paid attention to politics will cross over or get out and vote in 2012 to repeal the law.

So for now I'm unhappy but tomorrow the sun will shine again and the process of tearing this down begins. This bill is unpopular and it's political supporters will be defeated. Mark My Words!

Darrell,

Not to start an argument but if you take the time read the decision you will see that Justice Roberts followed the precepts of the law. SCOTUS ruled ACA constitutional on the basis that Congress has the right to tax (a last minute argument added by the administration) if that argument had not been added and the bill was judged on it's constitutionality under the Commerce Clause it would have been ruled unconstitutional. As bad as this seems now, Roberts actually gave the states a win, Congress can no longer withhold funds if states do not comply with federal programs. Before I step out on the ledge, I am going to wait and see what happens over the course of the next few months, starting on July 11th. Just saying

It doesn't matter whether this decision helps Obama's campaign or not. The fact is that it helps all Americans. Your article gauging the reaction from hospital administrators and health care providers tells us they're happy to be able to offer American more affordable health care and largely reduce the number of uninsured. No one likes to see people go without health care when they need it. That it has been the case that as the cost of health care has skyrocketed so has the number of uninsured has been a tragedy, inhumane and unAmerican.

I've also lived in countries that have offered universal health coverage and no one there would think of dropping the plan. Some countries do it better than others, but if long waits are what you want to measure health care by, then before ACA we've had both long waits for emergencies and necessary procedures, and the highest cost for health care in the world. It couldn't be worse. The Democrats in DC fixed it. Its not the best plan, but better plans were blocked altogether by Republicans who, strangely, have convinced some people that our expensive and unaffordable degrading health care model was better than any improvements offered.

"No one there would think of dropping the plan." ?? Really? I have close relatives in England and every one of them who has had the need for health care (as in a serious illness), loathes their system.
Long waits as a measure for health care? Um, yeah, because if you have to wait 8 months for surgery to remove a lump on your breast (as one of my relatives is) the possible cancer is spreading. So, here in the U.S. we would never have to wait for that long. I had a lump and it was removed in a week.

The government is WAY TOO INVASIVE in our private lives. Isn't that why we revolted against England - they were too invasive in our personal lives? At every level, our elected officials think they know what is best for us and instead of letting the free and open market determine cost/price they issue mandates. I agree we need to close the loop hole of providing "free" health services to those who visit hospitals and refuse to pay their bills. I think they should do as they have done with Dead Beat Parents - take a portion of their paycheck until the balance is paid off.

President Obama criticized the Clinton Administration for not being bold enough in their regulatory mandates. Here we have ObamaCare in his first term. His next term (God willing this won’t happen) he will attack our Second Amendment for law abiding citizens to own guns.

A vote for Mit Romney is a vote to appeal ObamaCare!

I say those in Congress should also be covered by this mandate and give up their paid-for healthcare provided by yours and mine tax dollars! Our Founding Fathers are rolling in their graves.

Politics aside -- I don't much care for Obama or Romney... I just calls 'em as I sees em'.. I think Obama and Justice Roberts (no relation:)
have a largely wrong approach to a very real problem. This ''keep the government out of our health care and let private insurance stick it to us'' rhetoric to me doesn't seem authentic Americanism. It bewilders me to see all these evangelical preachers on TV talk about how bad universal health care is too. The idea is not that the government is your doctor but that the government assures you access to fair treatment. If you don't believe that every person deserves medical attention, regardless of income then you believe America should offer worst treatment to our own citizens then even many third world countries offer theirs.
Our medical treatment IS NOT better then other first world countries. If you think so, you'd be mistaken. Our health care is the joke of the world. Private health care companies and even hospitals are totally out of control. Hospital give unnecessary treatments to make money. Insurance companies cancel coverage on lifetime payers when they develop a chronic illness. If you loose your job and get sick, you will loose your house too. It is a system totally and completely out of control. I trust the government to some level to send my children to war, deliver my sensitive mail and educate my children. Let without a better alternative, I trust them to REGULATE health care so all have access to it.

Gregg, I say this in a non attacking manner. You are clueless and very dangerous because you can vote. Please look at everything the government has a hand in and tell me why you would want them involved in healthcare. Public Schools are a joke, they push people through that can't read and write, the graduation rate is something like 69%. It cost something like $12,000 a year per student. Teachers are untouchable regardless of how inept they are. Look at the DMV, Medicare is going broke, SS is going broke. People from all over the world flock to this country for medical care because it's the best in the world. Not everyone here has medical "Coverage" but everyone here gets medical "Treatment" even illegal's - it's already a law. So please before you get involved in casting a decision that will affect me, educate yourself enough to know what you are actually talking about.

By the way, I'm not a liberal. I don't support abortion. I don't want to fund it. But allowing people who are born to die is no different.
Allowing private insurance companies to let people who can't pay die is not a Judeo-Christian value either. I sure as heck don't think it is an American value. Frankly, I am really concerned about all of this support for scheming private health insurance companies that so many people seem to have versus the government. Maybe I am missed something but I don't think we are getting a tax hike to help the uninsured..uninsured because they lost their job, got sick, are innocent children, etc. just using some wasted funds to do something of value. If you see a dying person in the street, would you help them if they could not pay your hourly wage? Insurance companies would not. You say ''there a business, not a charity.'' You have just made my point. Have your private insurance but let all be treated, especially those (the majority of the uninsured) who are so due to know or little fault of their own.

ObamaCare was modeled after RomneyCare so it might make no difference who wins the election. Between the two of them though, I think I prefer the one who isn't the "human chameleon" - who changes his colors to suit the political "background". Romney appears to me to be neither truly a conservative, a liberal, or anything. He will just say whatever he thinks he needs to say to win whatever office he happens to be running for. I don't think he actually has any real principles or beliefs. That makes me a little uncomfortable. He probably thought it would be "cool" to be president of the United States and just chose the Republican party to his vehicle of "convenience".

The Title of this article asks, "Will the SCOTUS decision help Obama's campaign?" the answer is no! Justice Roberts actually clarified a couple of things to all of us.
1. No Gov't can force us to purchase health care or any other service for that matter.(the commerce clause)
2. If Employers do not provide health care to it's employees a fee will have to be paid to the IRS. Justice Roberts basically said, it's a TAX not a penaly (Now the language is clear)
3. The Fed Gov't can't bully states who opt out of Obamacare by taking away existing funding (Medicaid)

So it's clear, Justice Roberts and the lands highest court says it a Tax, not a so called "penaly", So our Taxes will go up. So in conclusion, the SC ruling left it to us and our elected officails we place into office, to find out if the ACA is right for our country.

It will depend on who goes to the polls. Obama will be helped if the traditionally uninsured go to the polls. He will be hurt if those who pay their own premiums and those who employ other people go to the polls. As I see it, the major issues is whether we are going to be a country where less than half of us foot the bill for the majority? That idea is not far-fetched, and we must resolve to not let that happen, all for the good of our Country. Universal health care should work just fine when persons who are employable are universally employed. I have seen too many strong and healthy people out of work to suggest that our economy can afford universal health care given the level of unemployment. Unemployment grows, and the federal deficit increases... this cannot go on forever.

As for the original question of this poll - it probably won't make any difference either way, by the time election day rolls around. The good thing is that more people will become educated on what the ACA law really says since it's not going away. So if the medicare/medicaid recipients and uninsured people turn out at the polls, it will probably offset a lot of the vote from people who are dead set against Obamacare just because it has Obama's name on it. So it's probably a wash in the end.

Not sure. President Obama needs to get away for about a month or so. Get out of the public eye. The more he is front of the camera, with Eric Holder, the Wasserman lady and the terrible Axelrod, the more they divide the country. The nastiness is terrible. This is much like President Bush.
I don't understand how politicians from either party can sleep at night. It has become a game to them, and the American people are the chess pieces.
Both parties need to stop telling lies.
The only national politician I have seen from either party that really puts it out there and says - "This is my plan, here it is. You can trash it, but I will put it out there" is Paul Ryan. It may not be perfect, but he puts himself out there.
Congress should have performance clauses in it. If they do not meet certain requirments that we the American people expect from them, they and their staff do not get paid.

Face it the President sets the tone and the Congress decides on it's fate. As far as the Supreme Court, I say term limits for them to! It should not be based on their health(by the way they decide whether they are heathly enough) or their Death! Watch the movie "Hot Coffee" , you will get a new perspective on who will get into office and campaign reform!

It already has helped the President. Look at how his poll numbers surged upwards literally over night. RMoney will never catch him.

Why do those who are opposed to government intervention want to give their money to someone who will take more of it for his/her own profit (a private entity) and do with it whatever he/she likes, rather than to someone they elect and trust to regulate the private market through organizations like the FDA and who will redistribute the money where it is most needed?

Thank God for President Obama who really cares about average people. The Republicans care about the rich and the big corporations.

If Obamacare is so good for the people of this country, why in the hell were congress and the labor unions granted a waiver or exempt. I purposely didn't capitalize the two flukes since I have no respect for either of them.
