Shooting, Multiple Stabbing Outside New Red Rock Cafe

Police said nearly 100 people were involved in a fight at a Gaithersburg restaurant early Sunday.

Montgomery County police are investigating a shooting and multiple stabbing in a fight that quickly escalated outside a Gaithersburg cafe early Sunday.

Police said nearly 100 people were involved in the altercation that broke out inside, and migrated outside, the New Red Rock Café at 385 Muddy Branch Road in the Festival Shopping Center around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

New Red Rock Cafe was hosting a Rapper Karaoke Night, which attracted a large, young adult audience from around the region, police said. Police said a fight apparently broke out between two women initially, and then escalated when others got involved.

Police said witnesses were uncooperative and they did not have a description of any suspects.

"The officers were able to establish a perimeter and bring the situation under control," Lucille Baur, a police spokeswoman, told WTOP. "Many individuals fled from the scene once police arrived."

Seven people were transported to hospitals, including a Washington, DC, man who suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound, five men who received non-life threatening stab wounds and one woman who transported herself to the hospital for lacerations, officials said.

Another man was punched with a blunt object but did not require transport and a number of others with minor injuries refused treatment, according to police.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the 5th/6th District Investigative Section at 240-773-6237.

Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information provided to them that leads to an arrest and/or indictment.

Anonymous tips can also be provided by typing “MCPD” plus the tip on a cell phone or PDA and texting it to 274637 (CRIMES).

Oh really Patch? God forbid that you describe the young adults.

If you read the press release from Montgomery County Police (at http://www.mymcpnews.com/ ) that was the description available. No race or any other details for that matter.

If the young adults were not black they would state their race, so why not state that the crowd was black? Makes no sense.

There were many dance clubs years ago to go to in the Gaithersburg area: Raffles at the Marriott (which is now the Hilton), Holiday Inn (in the basement), The Main Event (Walnut Hill next to 7-11), and The End Zone in Germantown. ALL OF THESE CLUBS were all shut down due to drug activity and violence caused by black americans. This is not racist...it is fact. P.S.--I am black.

What is wrong with stating the facts as it is these days? The youths were black. It would only be an issue if they weren't.

Rapper Karoake - c'mon you know that means mainly black. How can the rest of us feel comfortable around black people, if they act like this everywhere! I hate the fact that I get scared of black people when I'm walking outside late night but how can I not worry about my safety?

I don't understand. Is it what you've read or listened to? Has any "black person" assaulted you?? This seems like a personal problem and you may need to seek some help. I can't imagine what you are going through each day knowing that your President is black............... God, I hope you never have to eat peanuts or need open heart surgery, or stop at a traffic light, or need blood transfusions or need to use your air conditioner, or sharpen your pencil, or cook, or ride a bike ....... Black people have their hands all over this.

Yes, it is proper to be respectful of all races and creeds, but what do you do when one race lacks the proper values. I believe that it is on right to point it out and educate them. You (Patch) should not censor the facts.....

People like yourselves are the main reason this world has problems. You are so quick to judge when in Montgomery county alone, the majority of crimes commited are not from African Americans. Please educate yourselves and stop taking what ever Fox 5 says as truth.

You have to be kidding me... one race lacks the proper values?! young adults = african american? It's so disheartening that people still think this way. I have no clue what values these are. I am a young black woman, and where I come we didn't fight or use weapons. I don't know what values my parents taught that these people's parents allegedly did not, but don't be ignorant. Their skin color has nothing to do with it.

Actually you are wrong. And please don't state facts for what you are unsure of because it continues to harm everyone which is why we have an even greater race barrier today. A lot of bars in Montgomery County are hosting these events now and I have seen a lot of white, asian, hispanic races making this popular (since I am a promoter and would know). The Green turtle has been hosting it for a while with no problems.

I've been to country karaoke nights over and over again many times and not once as there been a fight or people yelling at eachother. Everytime I hear about my black friends going to a Rapp Karaoke concert there is an altercation everytime, maybe not this big but of some sort, and THEY STILL GO! It's CULTURAL..............TRUF!

I watched reports on this on three different stations. They showed dozens of people that night, and yes they were mostly black with some hispanics. No, this does not mean all of a particular race is like this, but certain events draw certain people. This event is sad, but what is even more upsetting is just what has happened to Muddy Branch/Gaithersburg in general.

It all comes down to the people that come to these events, no matter what race. They don't know how to act! Maybe better security to bounce those troublemakers out and be escorted by the police.

For those taking up the issue of race, I'll refer you to this comment by Patch's Sonia Dasgupta on another post about Sunday's incident:

"Actually for the bar fight in Gaithersburg, police did not supply anything about the suspects as they were having trouble getting people to talk.
In general, however, race and height isn't enough of a description to find a suspect, which is why we don't include it.

However, if the police know details— for example, it's a white man, in his 30s, blond hair, brown eyes, 5' 11'', with a mustache and a tattoo on his left arm of the sun, we'll include the whole description because it's something people may actually be able to identify.

Hope that helps you understand why we choose to include descriptions sometimes and other time, we don't.

Thanks for your comment!"

It's very simple ... you aren't in New York... You aren't in L.A. .... you aren't in Philly.... you are in GAITHERSBURG. This reminds me of stray cats fighting over a dumpster in Miami... 100 person fight @ Redrock in GAITHERSBURG ... how foolish can people be. I worked at a bar in Gaithersburg and it's ALWAYS girls that start the huge fights over guys ... girls are so silly - The guy is cheating on both of you that think he is "your man" - He doesn't care he's just gonna hit it and quit you. How stupid do you have to be?

Seriously, I respect your opinions and welcome this conversation about crime in your neighborhood, however regardless of you familiarity with one race or another, this story isn't about race - it's about a bar fight that got out of control.

The real question is— if a restaurant holds a special event they know will attract a large crowd, should they be responsible for the security and are they on the hook if something goes wrong.

And, the other question is how many of the people were minors -- and this brings us back to the debate about the county move to have a curfew.

So where is the follow up story on whether the place had security? Why is there no follow up story on whether there were minors involved? Did the reporter even bother going to the restuarant? Or is that too much trouble?

So Patch basically just copies and pastes the police press release? I thought that this was an online newspaper? How about sending a reporter to the scene? How about going there the next day and asking people what the crowd looked like?

Or is that too much trouble?

Great points Joe. Thanks for you comment.

If you read Greg's coverage of the shooting on Monday and his continued coverage in coming days, you'll see as details are unfolding, he's reporting them. When it comes to crime, it's our duty as journalists to get the information, but also to make sure it's confirmed by officials or police. In this case the confirmation came from a press release, but also from calls and conversations with the police spokespeople.

When news breaks during normal working hours, we are on the scene describing what is happening as it unfolds. It's a little more difficult to do on a Sunday at 1:30 a.m.

But, if there's some aspect of the story you think we're missing -- please let us know and we can try to get the information back out to the public. You're also welcome to call the police spokespeople yourself and get information.

The bottom line here is that the mainly fatherless youth every where are out of control! There is a serious lack of moral values and mob mentality at work here. Give that some reflection along with the fact that many of you so called adults are bickering like children yourselves. It takes a village to raise a child and they are lucky if they have one parent around, and if I might add that said parent instills any values.

I have been a manager at several restaurants/bars in Gaithersburg. We have held multiple large events at those locations. Rap is a genre of music that is followed by a very large percentage of African Americans, its that simple, and nothing is wrong with that. Its up to the owner and managers of the establishment to insure that saftey of their customers is the # 1 priority. 5 security guards is a joke. When I have been involved in planning an very large event, knowing that there is a good possibility that there is going to be a few that will try to disrupt and ruin the event I have hired off duty police officers plus my entire security staff. And yes there were incidents, but were defused quickly and the subjects removed from the event. Also the owners/manager need to notify the Gaithersburg City and Montgomery County Police and let them know about the event, so they know to increase patrols in the area. So this event was a rap contest your probably going to get a majority of African Americans, if it was a counrty contest your probably going to get a majority of whites, salsa contest hispanic and so on. Its a owner/management problem. You have to spend money to make money. Don't skimp on having the correct amount of security on hand. Lets all stop pointing fingers and each other and just relax and enjoy the music. Any music. God Bless All..

I'm really disappointed in the line of comments on this article. Some people in a bar became unruly and started a fight -- period. What does it matter what color they were? Let's point our fingers at the *perpetrators* of the crime, not the entire race(s) that those perpetrators came from.

Cat, Sorry you are disappointed with my comments. I really shouldn't matter what color they were, but you have to realize this is the world we live in today. To be honest if I were the owner or the manager of the Red Rock I would have never held an event of this nature. Why? History. When you bring in people from different parts of the area with a Rap Contest your bound to get people from different gangs to attend. Gangs if your not aware have cost taxpayers billions of dollars, arresting, going to trial, jail ( which last I heard costs us 80,000 per year to house an inmate) injury to innocent people, businesse to close (Perfect example Red Rock) Gangs have no respect for anyone but themselves. And if you think there were no gangs at this event you are highly mistaken. Gangs don't play well together, so why encourage an event that is going to bring that element to your establishment. It sucks but that is the way of the world these days. Until we, the government, stop slapping anyone ( white, black, hispanic, asian) who commits a crime on the wrist and really punish them its not going to stop. So Cat wake up and smell the coffee. Its a f_ _ ked up world we live in and its only getting worse. I can go all day on this subject.

That we use the word "race" with these incidents is a reaction to leftist cultural engineering. It is a dumbed down defensiveness, a utility given minorities to shift blame from behavior to race. Behavior is a choice and genetics you can do nothing about.

The violence is about behavior, not genetics. Race or genetics are used to excuse bad behavior. If you are from an enclave of a violent or disturbed culture, like a childish tantrum, you can turn the arguments identifying your behavior into shaming others. This is done by calling them racist and by so doing even you can be empowered appearing to win simply by the shock of shame when people are presumed racist for evaluating a crowd's typical behavior. I read it on this thread.

This is a tactic the left has inculcated into minorities. AKA a subset of PC.... Make it about race, not culture or personal responsibility. This is flattery, the tool the left uses to horn in on minority voting blocks. Alinsky's rule # 5. You can trace this tactic back to 20 of so Marxist forefathers of modern American liberalism who have hijacked the Democratic party post WW2.

I forgot to add to the above post: If you can make the issue about race, then you can become a victim even though you were the perp. This is the result of Frankfort School cultural engineering.

Truth walks its way into declaring responsibility. If you distinguish what is race from what is choice then we move closer to more truth. The next venue is arguing about environment, to stop blaming poverty and violence upon the greed of others for one's behavior. The inertia of that argument is lost when we see Jesus, the foremost victim, Who owned nothing, rejecting violence. By whom to you want your culture affected, Christianity or the engineering of atheistic Bolshevism? One flatters immorality promoting divisions and the other calls it out by truth. This is why truth is being called hate by liberal activists today. It is the reason Jesus was executed, nothing new really.
