Montgomery County Councilwoman talked to reporters Thursday about proposed legislation that would expand Montgomery's smoking ban to include county-owned parking garages, golf courses, parks and all other property owned or leased by the county.

The Montgomery County Council will soon consider whether to expand the county's ban on smoking. Proposed by Councilwoman Nancy Floreen—who battled breast cancer last year—the new legislation would outlaw smoking on all property owned or leased by county government.

Floreen (D-At large) of Garrett Park plans to submit the bill Nov. 27, and a public hearing has been tentatively set for Jan. 15.

Here's a look back at some of milestones in Montgomery County's crackdown on tobacco:

1986 - Smoking banned from Metro stations and most county government workplaces.

1988 - Smoking banned from rest rooms, auditoriums and the public areas of offices, retail stores, banks and other private businesses.

1992 - Tobacco products banned from most vending machines.

1999 - Smoking banned in all restaurants. The measure was declared invalid in 2003 because of a procedural issue, but quickly reinstated.

2011 - Smoking banned from playgrounds, hallways, laundry rooms and other shared areas in apartment complexes.

Legislating for non-smoking in enclosed areas and areas occupied by children make sense, but not open areas.

Agreed, and what does telling us Nancy Floreen battled breast cancer have to do with the topic of this article?

I was against smoking bans when I was a smoker. But since I switched to electronic cigarettes two years ago, I don't have to worry about smoking bans, tar, smell or really high cigarette taxes! http://www.savecig.com

Does Montgomery County make non-smoking, no tobacco use a condition of county employment?
