Smithsonian to Suffer More Severe Sequestration Stoppages

Closing exhibits will not be replaced to save on security costs.

  Exhibits that are scheduled to close at the Hirshhorn, National Museum of African Art and Smithsonian will not be replaced due to sequestration, according to a Smithsonian spokeswoman. Linda St. Thomas told the DCist website that “in terms of the security of our visitors, bigger crowds require more security,” but she added, “Every museum is still open every day.” The actual number of exhibits accessible to visitors at open museums are yet another casualty of sequestration. On April 16, Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough warned Congress of the potential effects of sequestration on the area’s museums - gallery closings, reduced educational program offerings and building maintenance issues. Gaithersburg Book Festival: Schedule For Featured Presentations Announced

The Gaithersburg Book Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds of City Hall in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

The schedule of featured speakers for the Gaithersburg Book Festival was announced Wednesday afternoon. The Saturday, May 18, event will feature pairings of authors, panel discussions on hot topics in the book world and one-on-one conversations between authors and critics and industry insiders.  “In the past, we’ve done a handful of author pairings – often at the authors’ requests to be on panels with their friends – and we found those were some of our most lively presentations,” Jud Ashman, festival founder and City Council Member, said in an announcement. “This year, we thought we could enhance the experience for our attendees, as well as our featured authors, by offering more of these dynamic pairings, in addition to the single author …

Gaithersburg Student Claims $10,000 Prize In National Poetry Contest

Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Champion Blessed Sheriff, a sophomore at Richard Montgomery High School and resident of Gaithersburg, finished second.

A Gaithersburg student claimed a $10,000 prize for being runner-up in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals. Blessed Sheriff, a sophomore at Richard Montgomery High School and a resident of Gaithersburg, was the Maryland State Poetry Out Loud Champion, according to an announcement. Sheriff was one of nine finalists, selected from a pool of 53 students representing every state, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands at the national finals. Hosted at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium Tuesday night, Sherriff fell just short of the $20,000 grand prize for the poetry recitation contest. Local Rapper Signs Record Deal With Def Jam

Gaithersburg rapper Logic inks record deal with industry titan, according to reports.

A Gaithersburg rapper has inked a record deal with a longtime industry titan, according to a report by Complex Music. Logic—also known by his real name: Sir Robert Bryson Hall II—was signed by Def Jam Recordings, according to the report. The 23-year-old rapper's debut album will be produced by No ID, who has worked with Common and Nas on past projects, according to the report. "I'm excited to take this next step in my career. It's incredible for Def Jam [Records] and Visionary Music Group to work together and the opportunity to collaborate with a living legend like No I.D. is priceless. Oktoberfest To Expand, Celebrate Gaithersburg Faces Changes

City Manager: Oktoberfest will remain in Kentlands, Celebrate Gaithersburg will have a new date and theme.

Gaithersburg's Oktoberfest festival will remain in Kentlands and expand, while Celebrate Gaithersburg will have a new date and theme, City Manager Tony Tomasello told the Mayor and City Council during a fiscal 2014 budget presentation Monday. Oktoberfest, held for the past 21 years in Kentlands, will expand toward Market Square and Main Street, The Gazette reported.  The festival also will add another stage of music while the beer garden and Bavarian dancers will return, with some additional activities for families, city Arts and Events Division Chief Denise Kayser told The Gazette. The city of Gaithersburg announced two new spring art programs to be held at the Kentlands Mansion and Gaithersburg Arts Barn, respectively: Experience Beethoven, Brahms and Weber at Kentlands Mansion Experience the sublime majesty of Beethoven, the passionate richness of Brahms and the charming virtuosity of Weber in the intimate warmth of Kentlands Mansion.
