U.S. Rep. John Delaney on Saturday endorsed Douglas M. Duncan at the former Montgomery County Executive's first major campaign event in his bid to regain his old job. “Doug Duncan’s record speaks for itself and his values and expertise are well-known around our county,” Delaney (D-Dist. 6) of Potomac said in a statement released by Duncan’s campaign. “I know Doug has the long term vision to make our county a great place to work, live, start a business, raise a family, and he has a plan to make Montgomery work.” Duncan, a Democrat, served three terms as county executive from 1994 to 2006. The city of Gaithersburg is seeking election judges for its municipal elections in November, according to a news release. To be eligible, interested applicants must be registered to vote in Montgomery County. Residency within the City of Gaithersburg is not required and attendance at an election judge training session is mandatory. Judges may work either full or half-day shifts. A full day is from 6:15 a.m. until the closing of the polls. Half day shifts are available from 6:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 1 p.m. until close of polls. Council members opposed amendments to the definition of a political action committee and the addition of slates to city election code.
Gaithersburg officials voted in favor of adding a fifth campaign finance report for the 2013 city elections, but unanimously opposed making changes to the city's election code defining political action committees and the addition of slates. The fifth finance report will be due 14 days after city elections. Other options for the proposed ordinance included: The Board of Supervisors of Elections recommended the city revise the definition of a political committee from a group of two or more to a group of three or more that collects or spends $1,000 or more "to assist in the promotion of the success or defeat of any candidate or slate of candidates for city elective office." The Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Elections is recommending multiple changes to the city's election code. An ordinance introduced at Monday's Mayor and City Council meeting would revise the definition of a political committee within the city by defining a "slate" and requiring a fifth additional finance report due 14 days after city elections. "A slate would be defined as two or more candidates who join together to conduct and pay for joint campaign activities," according to a city staff report. The Silver Spring Councilwoman joins Councilmembers George Leventhal and Phil Andrews, former County Executive Doug Duncan as Democratic candidates, The Washington Examiner reported.
Montgomery County Councilwoman Valerie Ervin, of Silver Spring, announced plans to join an already crowded Democratic field for the 2014 county executive race, The Washington Examiner reported. Ervin joins County Councilmen George Leventhal (At Large) and Phil Andrews (Gaithersburg/Rockville), along with former County Executive Doug Duncan in the race, according to the report. Current County Executive Ike Leggett could still announce a run for re-election. Ervin, 55, said she'd had "serious discussions" with multiple community members, pollsters and media consultants about starting her campaign, according to the report.
