Silver Spring Student Comes in 3rd Place in BioGENEius Competition!

Neil Davey, a Senior at Montgomery Blair High School was named the 3rd place winner of the BioGENEius Challenge, the premier competition for high school students across the world that recognizes outstanding research in biotechnology.  A panel of judges found that Neil’s research stood out from the 14 other finalists from across the US and Canada competing in the Challenge.

 

The BioGENEius Challenge is unique among international competitions in hosting participants at a leading industry conference, where they get the chance to meet industry experts and scientists.  This exceptional opportunity serves to inspire the next generation of STEM innovators in their career paths in the biotechnology industry.  The BioGENEius Challenge highlights exemplary student research to encourage today’s youth to consider education and careers in biotechnology.

Neil presented his project entitled “Early Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment through the Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells using Drop-based Microfluidics” to the judges. His project uses the combination of drop-based microfluidics and polymerase chain reactions, to create a technology that enables the detection of circulating tumor cell genes, which can help in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Neil won the 3rd place cash prize of $2,500 while in San Diego.
