Gaithersburg Council To Hear Presentation On Lakelands Park Synthetic Turf Field

The Mayor and City Council will meet for a work session at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall.

Gaithersburg's planned synthetic turf field at Lakelands Park will alleviate issues of overuse and meet the needs of both Montgomery County Public Schools and the city's sports programs, according to a presentation scheduled before the City Council Monday evening.

"The presentation will demonstrate that the city is advancing the use of playing fields while eliminating the need for fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and mowing," according to a report by city staff. "There will be less disruption to programs and schedules because of rainouts. Revenue is projected to increase through the aforementioned as well as additional programming and added rentals."

The field would cost $1 million and is expected to be completed in spring 2014. The council approved a contract for the project's planning on Dec. 3 and is expected to choose a contractor for the project this fall.
