Metro Fare Hikes Proposed for 2015

Metro is proposing a new fare hike for the 2015 fiscal year, with increases up to 4 percent of current fares, The Washington Postreported.

But, as The Post explains, the actual fare increases are likely to be lower than 4 percent, because while Metro can reduce the proposed fare increase based on passenger feedback received at upcoming public hearings, it cannot increase the proposed fare at this point.

Six public hearings are planned this month and next to solicit passenger feedback about the proposed fare hikes.


As part of the proposed fare increases, the basic boarding charge to ride Metrorail for up to 3 miles at peak time would rise from $2.10 to $2.20. The maximum peak fare would rise from $5.75 to $6. Parking fees in Metro garages in Montgomery County would rise by a quarter of a dollar. See the full list of Metro's proposed fare increases on Metro's website.

All six public hearings will include an information session at 6 p.m. and a hearing at 6:30:

• Hearing No. 589: Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Greenbelt Marriott (6400 Ivy Ln., Greenbelt, MD). Free shuttle to and from the Greenbelt station.
• Hearing No. 590: Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Hilton Springfield (6550 Loisdale Rd., Springfield, VA). Free shuttle to the Franconia-Springfield station after 7:30 p.m.
• Hearing No. 591: Monday, Feb. 3, at the Matthews Memorial Baptist Church Fellowship Hall (2616 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE, Washington, DC).
• Hearing No. 592: Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Montgomery County Executive Office Building cafeteria (101 Monroe St., Rockville, MD; entrance on Jefferson Street).
• Hearing No. 593: Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Arlington Central Library (1015 N. Quincy St., Arlington, VA).
• Hearing No. 594: Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Metro Headquarters Building (600 5th St. NW, Washington, DC).
