Report: Aging Water Mains Could Be Problem For Crown Developers

New homes in Crown development could be required to be built blast-proof, The Gazette reported.

Homes in Gaithersburg's new Crown development may have to be built blast-proof due to two "potentially dangerous" water mains on the site near Decoverly Drive, The Gazette reported.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz described the 60-inch and 36-inch diameter mains as “defective and potentially dangerous” in a March 29 letter to Montgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro, according to the report, and asked for the pipes to be replaced.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission told The Gazette there is a known issue about how those pipes fail but not all pipes like the ones under Crown are defective.

The developers agree with Katz that WSSC should replace the pipes, according to the report. Instead, WSSC wants developers "to dedicate additional 80-foot right-of-way easements on either side of the water mains, but also mandating additional costly design criteria."
