Examiner: Gaithersburg was one of three Mid-Atlantic cities to crack the top 100 fastest-growing cities with populations of 50,000 or more.

Gaithersburg's population is among the fastest growing in the country for a city its size, The Washington Examiner reported.

The city was one of three Mid-Atlantic cities to crack the top 100 fastest-growing cities with populations of 50,000 or more, according to the report. The majority of the list is comprised of Sun Belt states—South and Mountain West, with Texas alone accounting for 27 cities on the list.

From 2010 to 2012, Gaithersburg grew by 4.9 percent to 62,794 residents, according to the report.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz told The Examiner he attributes the city's growth to its businesses and schools.

"We're here every day, so you don't notice it growing on a daily basis, but over the years we have seen Gaithersburg grow," Katz said, according to the report. "Good businesses bring good jobs. People come to work here and know it's a nice area to live in."
