Art of Seeing at the Activity Center in Bohrer Park

The Silver Spring Photography Club is showing 51 photographs at the Activity Center in Bohrer Park from now until January 9

"The Art of Seeing," a photography exhibit on view through January 9, 2011 at The Activity Center in Bohrer Park, invites you to look through the camera lens and see the world as the photographer sees it.

The show is comprised of the work of The Silver Spring Camera Club and includes over 51 individual photographs captured with digital SLR cameras.

Jim Auerbach, the coordinator of "The Art of Seeing" exhibit, which features 17 different artists called the show a grouping of "extraordinary examples of quality fine art photography."

"It really speaks to the abilities of the members of the Silver Spring Camera Club," he said.

Elizabeth Poole, Recreation Program Specialist for the City of Gaithersburg also commented on the show: "The breadth of works makes you realize how beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. This show documents scenery and captures moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Until the photographer offers a view into previously unexplored territory, it is impossible to imagine the beauty and complexity therein."

The photography club has 75 members total and has another show on view simultaneously in Rockville. The group also exhibited in the Kentlands Mansion last year. Members range from serious amateurs to professional photographers and are all united by driving passion for photography, friendly competition and learning through the cross-pollination of ideas and techniques.

"Many photographers in our club choose to retouch their photos in software programs like Photoshop, but several also leave them unaltered," Auerbach said in an interview with Patch.

Participants chose three pieces each to display at Bohrer Park, and Auberbach came up with the theme for the show.

Among the framed prints are treescapes, citiscapes, wildlife portraits, closeups of flowers, waterfalls, seascapes, industrial yards, and human figures in motion.

The group would like to dedicate "The Art of Seeing" to the recently deceased John St. Clair who was an active member of the photography club and whose work will also be featured in the exhibit.

The Activity Center viewing hours are Monday through Saturday from 8am to 9pm and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.

Andi Rosati, Facilities Director at the Arts Barn have an overview of the show and the venue: "The Silver Spring Camera Club's exhibit has a wide variety of subject matter, which makes for an interesting show. Many patrons of the Activity Center enjoy viewing our art exhibits in this multipurpose community space where they can experience art alongside social and athletic events."

Photographers featured in the exhibit include: Greg Holden, My Phuong Nguyen, Peter Hui, Beth Koller, Stan Klem, Kevin Duncan, Douglas Wolters, George DeBuchananne, Elisa Frumento, Angelique Raptakis, David Mullen, Mark Ratner, Coriolana Simon, Jim Auerbach, Judy Saunders, Carl Brandt and John St. Clair.
