Arts Barn Seeks Resident Studio Artists

The Arts Barn is now accepting applications for its resident artist studio program. The application deadline is May 31. Artists will be selected by a jury panel and must be qualified and available for a moderate amount of community teaching and instruction or similar activities for which they may be compensated.

The Arts Barn has two studios for lease ranging in size from 330 to 480 square feet. Both spaces enjoy natural light, ’round the clock access, a small sink and cabinet area, and adequate lighting. Because of the nature of the facility, certain media or scale of activity may not be appropriate for the space.

Jubilation Day Brings Gospel Music to City Hall Concert Pavilion

Gospel music, the uniquely American art form that gave rise to jazz, blues, R&B, and rock and roll, will be celebrated in all of its glory as Gaithersburg presents the 7th Annual Jubilation Day Gospel Extravaganza.

On Saturday, June 1, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Concert Pavilion at City Hall will host performances of all styles of Christian music and worship by local and regional choirs, choruses, quartets, dancers, and soloists. The celebration will also feature food and crafts for purchase. Commemorative t-shirts are available for advance purchase for $12, or $14 at the event.

Summer Kids Entertainment Series Kicks Off June 6

The air will be filled with delightful sounds and important life lessons this summer as nine different entertainers sing, dance and otherwise captivate young audiences during Thursday Morning Kids Concerts, June 6 through August 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the City Hall Concert Pavilion. From an award-winning family musician to interactive children’s theater to a misunderstood monster, parents and children alike will enjoy the variety of free performances.

Enjoy an Evening of Opera at Concert Pavilion

In partnership with the Bel Cantanti Opera Company, the City of Gaithersburg presents “Die Fledermaus,” a comic opera by Johann Strauss II on Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the City Hall Concert Pavilion.

Sung in German with English dialog, “Die Fledermaus,” or “The Bat,” is a story of one man’s elaborate plan for revenge that leads to an evening of mistaken identities and lighthearted deceit. Set in 19th-century Vienna, Dr. Falke takes revenge on his friend, Gabriel Von Eisenstein, for playing a practical joke on him. Colorful characters collide at a lavish party filled with intrigue and disguise in this delightful farce filled with lively melodies and charming sentiment. English subtitles will be projected on a screen. Bring a picnic and blanket or low-back chair for lawn seating. There will be a 10-minute intermission.
