Quince Orchard Students Aim To Raise $50K To Build School In Sierra Leone

Town Courier: Fundraiser is part of the Gaithersburg school's 25th anniversary celebration.

Students at Quince Orchard High School are working on a project that will help boost education in West Africa.

As part of the Gaithersburg school's 25th anniversary celebration, students and staff members are hoping to raise enough money to build a school in Robis, Sierra Leone, The Town Courier reported.

The school partnered with the nonprofit organization Schools for Salone, which estimates the cost of construction and first year operations for Robis School is approximately $50,000 (as compared to $2 to $3 million if it were built and operating in the United States), according to the report.

To date, the Quince Orchard community has raised about $15,000 and has more funds "in the pipeline," science teacher Jennifer Kempf—faculty sponsor of QO’s International Club and a former Peace Corps member who served in Sierra Leone—told The Town Courier.

“We think we can do it in two years,” Quince Orchard principal Carole Working said, according to the report.
