Raising Dollars for Doggies

One local woman is trying to make the holidays a little brighter for our four-legged friends.

Looking for a creative gift to give this year?

How about raising money to help a dog rescue shelter?

Read For Rescues, a program launched by Gaithersburg resident Debby Hartten, aims to do just that.

Kids interested in helping out can buy one of her pre-made kits designed to jump-start their fundraising efforts.

From there they collect pledges as they promise to read about dogs, rescues, and anything else that sparks their interest.

The kids then save their money, and send it to a rescue shelter of their choosing.

A real estate agent by day, Hartten spends countless hours raising awareness for dog rescues. In addition to Read For Rescues, she has launched Warm Hearts Happy Paws, a pet supply donation drive, and is in the process of developing Rally for Pet Rescues, a general outreach effort.

The Read for Rescues kits, which retail for about $28, include a starter book, a Moonjar collection box, as well as all the information and goodies needed to start fundraising.

Dogs not your thing? Don't worry, Hartten offers kits for cat-lovers too.
