Kentlands Shoppers Speak Out About Whole Foods' New Labeling Requirement

The supermarket chain will require that products must identify genetically modified organisms by 2018.

The Huffington Post recently reported that Whole Foods Markets will become the first national grocery store to require products to be labeled if they contain genetically modified organisms or GMOs.

A poll conducted by the Huffington Post in coordination with YouGov found that 82 percent of Americans think GMO foods should be labeled.

What do your neighbors, friends and colleagues think about Whole Foods’ plan to require the GMO label?

Patch spoke with some people outside the Whole Foods Market in the Kentlands to find out what they thought about GMO labeling.

  • “Well, I think it’s important - maybe not for me, but for her,” said Selena Rodriguez, who was pointing to her daughter in her stroller. “We don’t know now how it can affect us, so I think it’s good to know what she is eating,” Rodriguez continued.
  • Jason Hendler, a 67-year-old “professional retired person” has strong feelings about GMOs: “I’d never do anything unnatural like that in my garden at home, so I don’t know why anyone else has to,” he said. “At least when I shop here, I can avoid all that nonsense.”
  • Tiffany Anderson, a 19-year old college student, is in favor of the decision. “There is so much that big business tries to hide from people - we have a right to know what’s in our food!”
