BLOG: What Do You Know About Concentric Circles?

Some good ideas that will help foster meaningful conversation.

Whether you’re at the dinner table or meeting for lunch with co-workers at lunch, it helps to know that there are certain topics that make great conversation and help build community.

In an AVP workshop, chairs are placed in concentric circles with participants facing each other.  Participants are given a sentence to finish with a given amount of time.  The inner circle participants are the A group and the outer circle forms the B group.  This group moves from chair to chair around the circle but both groups respond to completing the same sentence.

Now you probably won’t be forming concentric circles but the topics can certainly be used to foster good, healthy conversation.  Children should be encouraged to put aside games, i-pods, and other items before coming to the dinner table.  The TV should never be on while you’re at the dinner table as a family. Unfortunately, too many families no longer eat dinner together on a regular basis and it is destroying family structure. There is a very interesting article by Alexandra Sifferlin in the April 24th issue of Time’s Heathland online.  It is well-worth reading!

Here are some topics to get you started:

*   A person I really respect and truly admire…

*   Something I’ve done that I’m proud of…

*   Something I want to work on this year is …

*   A place I would like to visit is…

*   One of the things I do best…

*   If I could give the world one thing, it would be…

*   If I had the power to make one good thing happen right now, I would…
