Happy New Year! 2012 is starting off with a bang, and there are plenty of things to do with the family already. Here are our picks for you and your family to enjoy this weekend in and around Gaithersburg.

  • , Friday, Jan. 6: Whole Foods will be hosting a story time in their kid's cafe area. Bring your favorite stuffed animal and blanket to sit on. Snacks will be served directly following the story. Books will be geared towards children ages 2-6 years old.
  • , Friday, Jan 6: Magicians Mark Phillips, Bob Sheets, Barry Wood, and Brian Curry invite you to join them at their exotic, strange and interactive, secret and very kooky Comedy and Magic Society performance. This is a family-friendly show, recommended for ages ten and up.
  • , Friday, Jan. 6, Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8: Last weekend to see the interactive world of colorful ice sculptures carved entirely from two-million pounds of ICE!  Don’t miss the Gaylord National's popular ICE! winter holiday attraction ICE! featuring DreamWorks' Merry Madagascar. Hours vary, check website for times and cost.
  • , Friday, Jan. 6: One (1) game of bowling and shoe rental and your choice of soft drinks, ice tea and an item from their set menu. $14.99 per person.
  • , Friday, Jan. 6: Last day to view the Montgomery Preservation Inc. and the Silver Spring Historical Society Present “Memories of the Season”, an exhibit of 1940’s Christmas ornaments and WWII memorabilia.
  • , Saturday, Jan. 7: Find your new family friend(s) at the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue Adoption Event.
  • , Saturday, Jan. 7: Head over to Michael’s Arts and Crafts store to make your very own fuzzy backpack friend. Free, while supplies last, ages 3 and up.
  • , Friday, Jan. 6, Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8: The Harmonious Art Group’s 17th Anniversary Exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy and Brush Painting. Fifteen group members and five invited artists from the metropolitan area are displaying their works in traditional and contemporary Chinese styles at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park.
  • , Saturday, Jan. 7: Bach to Rock in Gaithersburg is sending its high school bands to battle it out in the 9th semiannual B2R Battle of the Bands! The battle will be taking place at the 930 Club in NW Washington DC.  Come cheer on the local youth talent as they battle it out with other area high school bands for bragging rights.
  • , Sunday, Jan. 8: Join Shaare Torah Congregation on Sunday afternoon for an afternoon of Bingo. Bingo cards are $2 each. There will be a silent auction, 50/50, spin and win game and door prizes. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.
