Venomous Snake Captured in Quince Orchard Park

A Copperhead was found and captured last week.

The City's Animal Control division picked up a Copperhead snake last week, one of only two venomous snakes native to this part of Maryland.

The snake was found in the 100 block of Swanton Lane in the Quince Orchard Park neighborhood, City officials said, before it had a chance to cause any trouble.

"While it is rare that City Animal Control officers encounter Copperheads in Gaithersburg, it is a reminder that residents should be aware of their surroundings when doing yard work and other outdoor activities," a statement on the City's website said.

The other venomous snake that may be found naturally in this area is the Timber Rattlesnake.

Keep an eye out during evening and dusk hours, as that's when these snakes are most active. During the day they're likely to seek shade under rocks or anywhere out of direct sunlight.
