Fewer Than 2,000 Ballots Cast in Uncontested Gaithersburg Elections

Unofficial results show 5 percent of registered voters cast ballots Tuesday.

The City of Gaithersburg’s uncontested election for mayor and two council seats drew 1,730 ballots, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night.

Sidney A. Katz will serve another four years as mayor and so will Councilmen Henry F. Marraffa Jr. and Michael A. Sesma.

They will be sworn during a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.

According to the unofficial results, 5.4 percent of the city's 32,144 registered voters cast ballots. 

Of the ballots cast, 103 were early voters, 52 were absentee votes.

The results will be official once they are certified by the Board of Elections on Wednesday.

Katz has served as Gaithersburg mayor since 1998 and was a councilman for 20 years prior.

Sesma, council vice president, has been on the Gaithersburg City Council since 2005. Maraffa has served on the city council since 2000, and served a prior term from 1995 to 1999.
