Wootton High School Center for the Performing Arts Provides Fun with The 39 Steps, Full of Comedy, Drama, Murder, Spies and More.
Wootton Center for the Performing Arts offers a VERY entertaining night of theatre with The 39 Steps, a classic story of intrigue, spies, adventure and love.
The stage version of The 39 Steps is portrayed as a farce. It takes the framework of the Hitchcock story but plays with the conventions of theatre to tell the story in a ridiculous way. In The 39 Steps, solving the mystery may not be as interesting as the journey to get there. The morale of the story is appropriate for all ages—people are not always what they seem.
In the play, the actors’ skills are challenged with their movement and voices needed to communicate their character and the environment since the play relies heavily on lighting and sound effects to create the environment.
The Wootton production offers a theatrical learning opportunity to many students who previously have not been part of Wootton’s plays. Director Jessica Speck shares that she has “a four-year plan for the non-musical plays at Wootton: Drama, Murder Mystery, Shakespeare, and Comedy. With this plan, students of theatre are exposed to the full genre of plays in their years in high school.” This plan also offers lots of variation for audiences
