Frederick County Receives ‘AAA’ Rating

As if living in Frederick County couldn’t get any better, Fitch Ratings has recently awarded the county’s GO, or general obligation, an AAA rating with stable outlooks for the future.

Typically, Fitch’s ratings are used from an investor’s standpoint, to find locations that are likely to yield return.  But the same can be said from a homebuyer’s perspective – an area with an AAA rating would mean a wonderful place to live and raise a family.  After all, buying a home is considered an investment!

Frederick was recognized for having “satisfactory financial reserves, a sound budgetary performance, adequate revenue flexibility and strong economic characteristics.”  All of these factors contribute to the county being a stable one in Maryland.  But aside from the many promising monetary considerations, the “strong economic characteristics” was especially encouraging.

Frederick County, as well as Villages of Urbana, greatly benefits from being within an hour driving distance to both Baltimore and Washington DC metro areas.  This contributes to increases in population and employment opportunities, bringing more monetary value to the county, which all in turn help to attain even better education.  As noted in the report, “with a well-educated workforce and close proximity to vibrant labor markets, the county has maintained low unemployment rates and high wealth indicators.”  These rather strong economic qualities consistently perform at a level on par with or in excess of the state and nation, which played a big role in bringing an AAA rating to Frederick County.
