What do you do when the kids get sick?

On occasion, everyone gets sick. As parents, we know this and are prepared to deal with a sick kid when it is necessary. What do you do to stay sane when caring for a sick child?

It's January. It's winter. This is the time of year where we are stuck inside, usually because of the weather. This is when colds, flu and other forms of yucky stuff happens in our homes. If you are a parent, you know that you are going to have to deal with a sick kid from time to time. And, if you have more than one child, you also recognize that once one kid gets sick, chances are everyone will be coming down with it in the near future. We just brace ourselves for that eventuality. Many of us don't even try to prevent it from happening because we know it's just impossible.

The question is, what do you do when it happens?

That was us this weekend. I received a phone call from Ballerina's teacher on Friday telling me to pick her up ... her tummy was "off" and she needed to come home. What's the first thing I think of? Not, "Oh, poor baby!" but "When will Music Man and Big Brother get sick?" But I drove to her school to pick her up, knowing that something unwelcomed is going to work its way through our house. Sure enough, on Saturday, we saw both boys affected by the same thing. Big Brother had to miss his first basketball game (ever) as it hit him as he and his Dad were already driving to the game. Music Man missed music lessons. We all had to miss this weekend's gorgeous weather because we didn't know when another wave was coming.

So, we stayed inside. The computer and the Wii were working overtime. We took advantage of the DVR and DVD players. Big Brother spent part of Sunday learning to play chess (he received a game ["No Stress Chess"] from his cousin for Christmas). And our basement has become even MORE of a disaster area (if that was even possible).

As "Mom", I seem to have an immunity to most things that come through this place, so I hope this is no exception. But I'm going a bit crazy. The twins are playing on the computer and I'm writing a post (Big Brother was fine by Sunday and returned to school today). Hopefully, we're actually done with this all and they'll be going back to school tomorrow. Then I can find some sanity as I deal with a VERY busy week.
