Doggone Technology

A new technology is giving owners peace of mind in knowing how to find their pet should it wander off

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association's recently released survey of U.S. Pet Ownership, more than half (52.3%) of households in Maryland own a pet. Many of those that reside here in Gaithersburg and surrounding communities honored their four-footed, furry friends with a trip to Bohrer Park at Summit Hall Farm this past Saturday, April 27, to celebrate Paws in the Park Dog Walk & Fest and take part in a mile-long walk and enjoy games, pet-friendly vendors, demos, food and music.

Although there was only a nominal fee to attend this event, and it raised money for a good cause, pet-related expenditures in general — including food, trips to the vet, boarding and doggie day care — will top $52 billion this year alone.

With all that we do to keep our pets happy and healthy, many are making investments to ensure their safety as well. A new technology is helping to simplify that job and giving owners peace of mind in knowing how to find their pet should it escape at a park, through a door left ajar or an unlatched gate in hot pursuit of a mouse, bird or squirrel.

Pet Tracker made by Tagg and sold at local Verizon Wireless stores is a lightweight device that clips to your dog’s or cat’s collar. The device comes with a companion downloadable app and uses GPS tracking and wireless technology to monitor your pet’s location and activity. Should your pet get out, a text or email is automatically sent to your smartphone to notify you of the exact location. The technology is also a great way to ensure your pet is getting enough activity while you’re at work during the day.

Pet Tracker is priced at $99.99 and includes three months of free service. After three months, you’ll be charged $7.95 per month. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA9uLswjrIc
