Meet Gaithersburg's New Junior Mayor

The winner of the essay contest is a student at Gaithersburg Elementary School in Olde Towne.

The votes are in, and there will be no recounts.

This year's Junior is Maya Walker, a fourth-grader at . Here essay was selected from 93 entries, and focused on this year's theme, "Meeting the Challenge."

She wrote:

"If I were mayor I would have to face the many challenges that endanger the Gaithersburg community. Insuring the safety of Gaithersburg’s citizens would be the main thing me and my council would be working at. Protecting the people of our community is what our police force is here for."

Maya will get to read her entire essay during the May 21 State of the City address.

The Maryland Municipal League sponsored the contest, and similar contests in cities across the state.

In Gaithersburg, the winning essay was selected by the Educational Enrichment Committee.

Maya was one of the five finalists selected from the 93 entries, and was invited to for a video interview. She was ultimately selected as the winner.
