Police: Avalon Football Volunteer Failed To Register As Sex Offender

Andre McGant never told the private Catholic school he was a registered sex offender.

A man who was volunteering as a football coach at the Avalon School until last week was arrested by police for allegedly not properly registering as a sex offender, the Washington Examiner reports.

Andre A. McGant, 53, had coached at the school for about a year before the U.S. Marshall Service discovered that he had not properly notified officials of his activities.

"We were all pretty surprised," said school president Richard McPherson told the Examiner.

McGant allegedly told Tad Shields, the Avalon School's football coach, that he had played for the Seattle Seahawks. But the Examiner reports there is no records of McGant ever being on the team's roster.

McGant is listed on the Washington, DC sex offender registry for a third-degree sex offense committed in 2002.
