Click It or Get a $60 Ticket

Gaithersburg Police are stepping up seat belt enforcement efforts. Officers will be issuing tickets around the clock.

Drivers and passengers who fail to wear seat belts could be faced with a $60 ticket as the Gaithersburg Police Department redoubles efforts to encourage residents comply with state law.

According to a Gaithersburg Police Department press release, "Maryland law requires that the driver, front passenger, and any other passenger under the age of 16 in a vehicle must wear a seatbelt. A child under the age of 8, less than 4’9” tall and weighing less than 65 pounds is required to be in an approved child safety seat."

It comes down to safety and saving lives:

"Ejection from the vehicle is one of the most serious events that can occur during a vehicle crash. Of those people ejected from a vehicle, 75 percent are killed as a result of the ejection. About half of these lives could have been saved if they had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

“Wearing your seat belt costs you nothing, but not wearing it will.  So unless you want to risk a ticket, or worse, your life, please remember to buckle up night and day.  Don’t forget, Click It or Ticket isn’t just a campaign slogan, it’s a promise!” says Chief of Police Mark Sroka."
