Court Records Paint Timeline in Case of Accused Sexual Predator at Beer Pong Events

After a night of drinking at a local bar, a college student woke up the next morning on a stranger’s couch in Gaithersburg wearing another man’s shorts and a vague recollection of being taken advantage of, according to court records.

He had befriended a man during a beer pong game at Looney’s Pub in College Park, the documents state. They exchanged numbers and became friends on Facebook. The student consumed several beers from a pitcher, a shot of liquor and a Long Island iced tea.

That’s all he could remember.

These details were part of the timeline outlined in charging documents filed against Joey G. Poindexter in Montgomery County District Court.

Poindexter, 38, a real estate appraiser, was charged with second-degree sex offense in connection with the College Park incident.

The case was made public this week by Montgomery County police, who said they were investigating what they believe could be a series of rapes of young males lured from social events such as beer pong tournaments.

According to charging documents, the college student played beer pong at Looney’s on Oct. 2 and allegedly woke up on Poindexter’s couch the next morning. He was driven home to College Park later that day.

The student told police in Silver Spring what happened, thinking he may have been sexually assaulted. Police said an exam performed at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital showed evidence of an assault.

Eventually Poindexter emerged as a suspect, the charging documents show.

During the investigation, police staged a phone call between Poindexter and the college student and later staged a meeting between the two at a College Park Starbuck’s on Oct. 9.

Police said Poindexter was arrested shortly after the staged meeting and when interviewed with police, reportedly described having sexual contact with the youth, whom he described as incapacitated by alcohol.

Police said Tuesday two others with similar stories have come forward since the College Park incident. No charges have been filed related to those cases. 

Police said the investigation turned up a similar allegation made 10 years ago but it was halted.

A friend of Poindexter’s told The Washington Post that he was a “nice guy” and a beer pong regular. A manager at Looney’s told the newspaper that Poindexter, whom he described as “quiet,” showed up to the matches weekly and generally won.
