Crime in the News: Arrest of a Sex Offender

Sex offender from Rockville was volunteering as a football coach in Gaithersburg.

 

WUSA9 reported Friday that Andre McGant, 54, was arrested in February as part of a U.S. Marshals Service initiative targeting sex offenders who fail to register.

McGant was convicted in 2002 of sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl, WUSA9 reported.

He informed Maryland’s sex offender registry in 2008 that he was moving to the District of Columbia and said he would register there, WUSA9 reported. He never did, law enforcement officials said. Instead he continued to live in Rockville, a blog on backgroundsonline.com reported.

McGant was discovered volunteering as a football coach at The Avalon School in Gaithersburg, backgroundsonline.com reported.

The school performs background checks on employees, but not on volunteers, the blog reported. The school is changing that policy, the blog reported.

McGant faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a lifetime of supervised release, WUSA9 reported
