(UPDATED, 9:11 a.m.): For reasons still under police investigation, a cyclist traveling north on Berryville Road was hit by a Montgomery County school bus carrying students east on Darnestown Road, Montgomery County Police said in an update released late Wednesday night.
Police said the name of the bicyclist—who remains in critical condition—would be released once the family was notified.
The school bus driver, Michael Rinaldo, 53, of Germantown, was transported to an area hospital for a check-up, police said.
The school bus was carrying 29 students from Poolesville High School. None of the students were injured, according to police.
At around 2:30 p.m., police and emergency responders were dispatched to reports of a crash in which a school bus struck an bicyclist, leaving him in critical condition.
Investigators have asked anyone who witnessed this collision and have not spoken to detectives to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
(Original Post, 6 a.m.): DARNESTOWN—A bicyclist is in serious condition after being hit by a school bus carrying students in Darnestown on Wednesday, according to police.
Rescuers were dispatched to Darnestown and Berryville Roads at around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a crash involving a cyclist and a bus, Montgomery County Police Officer Britta Thomas said.
The cyclist was transported to the hospital for serious, life-threatening injuries, according to Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesman Scott Graham.
The bus driver was treated for minor injuries, Graham said.
No students were injured in the crash, according to Dana Tofig, a spokesman for Montgomery County Public Schools.
Tofig said the bus was carrying students from Poolesville High School. It wasn’t clear how many students were on the bus.
Thomas said traffic is closed in each direction of the crash.
