Gas Line Break Evacuates Costco

There are no injuries and the evacuation was precautionary.

A gas line behind Costco ruptured today causing a leak that prompted fire and rescue workers to temporarily evacuate the bargain chain location this morning, officials reported.

Shortly after 11 workers called in the leak at 880 Russell Ave., which was in the back of the building near the loading dock, Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Oscar Garcia said.

The initial call was that a three-inch line was broken, but responders believe it may have been smaller, he said.

Christopher Ave. was closed because of fire and rescue equipment were blocking the way, and Garcia said northbound Rt. 355 traffic was also affected.

The evacuation was precautionary, he added.
