Gas Line Struck, Building Evacuated

Gas company is on the scene.

Workers today struck and ruptured a gas line in the 700 block of Quince Orchard Boulevard, causing one town house to be evacuated, authorities said.

Washington Gas is on the scene and has isolated the leak, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service. They will soon be shutting off the flow.

One town home--building 720--was evacuated, Garcia said.

Initial reports said the line was 2 inches in diameter, but that is unconfirmed, he added.

A hazardous materials team was called to the scene to help monitor gas levels and determine if people in the surrounding areas were in danger.
