I-270 Crashes Stymie Thursday Morning Commute

No major injuries were reported; traffic backed up for hours.

Two crashes on Interstate 270 caused major delays during morning rush hour Thursday.

The first crash happened at around 8:20 a.m. and involved five vehicles at southbound I-270 and Shady Grove Road, a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokeswoman said.

An armored truck involved in the crash was leaking fuel, prompting hazmat crews to come and clean up, said Beth Anne Nesselt, an MCFRS spokeswoman.

Two people were taken to the hospital for a check-up, Nesselt said.

Almost an hour later, there were reports of a bus fire on southbound I-270, between Montgomery Village Ave. and Interstate 370 exits, Nesselt said.

The bus didn’t have any passengers. The driver put out the fire on his own.

As of 10:30 a.m., traffic was “very seriously” backed up south of I-370 as crews removed the vehicles involved, according to a Maryland State Police dispatcher.
