Man Arrested for Attempted Murder

He was drunk at the time, witnesses said.

A man who allegedly stabbed another three times turned himself in on Saturday, officials said.

Diego Pena Lopez, 41, of the unit block of N. Summit Ave., turned himself in on May 21 after police issued a warrant for his arrest, Police spokesman Dan Lane said.

According to Police, around 2 a.m. on May 15 Lopez was in the stairwell of a residential building when he saw the victim, someone he knew by sight but possibly not more than that, Lane said.

A witness told police that Lopez stabbed the victim three times—once in the left thigh, and twice in the right bicep. The witness also said Lopez was drunk, Lane said.

"Lopez walked up to the victim on the balcony and stabbed him twice without saying
anything," Police said witnesses told them. "Lopez then fled the scene on foot towards Lee Street."

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

Police do not think the attack was gang-related.

Police issued a warrant on May 17 charging Lopez with attempted first degree murder, assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, and possession of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure.

Then on Saturday, Lopez walked to the Gaithersburg Police station and turned himself in, Lane said.

According to an online database of State court records, Lopez has never been charged with a crime before this incident.

A picture of Lopez was not immediately available.
