News Nearby: Off-Duty Officer Struck By Vehicle in Germantown

(Updated 11:45 p.m., Oct. 2) An off-duty police officer helping at the scene of a crash was struck by a vehicle that slid off a Germantown off-ramp Tuesday, according to police.

Montgomery County Officer Fabio Chung was on the ramp from eastbound Route 118 onto southbound Interstate 270 when another vehicle slid off the roadway and struck him and his unmarked cruiser, Montgomery County Police said in a press release late Tuesday.

Police said Chung was treated at an area hospital. No other injuries were reported from the scene, police said.

Prior to the crash Maryland State Police received a report of a disabled bus on the ramp at around 5:15 p.m., a duty officer with the Rockville barrack told Patch.

State police said the bus dispensed oil on the ramp, which, when met with rain, led to slippery road conditions and subsequent collisions.

According to Montgomery County Police, emergency responders were notified of two separate collisions on the ramp. Initial reports noted that “a slippery substance” mixed with rain was causing vehicles to slide off the roadway,” police said.

Montgomery County Police Traffic Division is investigating Chung’s collision.

Chung is assigned to county’s third district station.

(Original Post, 6:36 p.m., Oct. 2) The southbound lanes of Interstate 270 at Germantown Road have been shut down as crews clean up oily residue from a police-involved crash that has led to subsequent crashes on the ramp, Montgomery County police said.

Montgomery County police officer Janelle Smith said the police-involved crash was reported at around 5 p.m., with reports of other collisions not too long afterward. The crashes that followed led police to determine there was an oily substance on the road, Smith said.

At the time this story published Tuesday, no information was available for the number of subsequent collisions, the number of vehicles involved, further details regarding the initial cruiser-involved collision, or the extent of any injuries.

Smith said the southbound lanes would remain closed until crews were able to clean up the oil.
