Police Chief Sroka Honors Officers for Handling of Red Rock Brawl

Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark P. Sroka presented Distinguished Service Citations to 16 officers who responded to the June 24 brawl at Red Rock Cafe in Gaithersburg.

Gaithersburg Police Chief Mark P. Sroka has honored a group of officers who responded to a in Gaithersburg's Festival Shopping Center along Muddy Branch Road.

At the Aug. 10 Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) breakfast at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, Sroka presented Distinguished Service Citations to 16 officers, Gaithersburg Police Department spokesperson officer Dan Lane said.

According to Lane: "The Distinguished Service Citation is presented to a member of a public safety organization or the civilian community who rendered services beyond the ordinary call of duty. It shall recognize those incidents wherein the members diligence, perseverance and timely judgment in the performance of a difficult task resulted in the protection of life or property, the prevention of a major crime or the apprehension of an armed and dangerous criminal."

The Red Rock brawl quickly escalated around 1:30 a.m., near the end of its rapper karaoke night promotion.

Seven people were transported to hospitals, including a Washington, DC, man who suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound, five men who received non-life threatening stab wounds and one woman who transported herself to the hospital for lacerations, officials said.
