Updated at 5:55 p.m.—DeAngelo McMullen is the 10-year-old boy who died after three children fell into an icy pond Monday in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County police said Tuesday.

"We would like to thank all of our family, friends, and the community for their support during this difficult time," the boy's family said in a statement on Tuesday. "Please respect our privacy while our family grieves the loss of our very special child."

At around 4:15 p.m. Monday, police and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue responded to a 911 call that three children were stuck in a sediment pond near Dimaondback and Reprise Drives. Two youths were immediately rescued but it took divers about 30 minutes to pull DeAngelo from the murky water.

DeAngelo later died at the hospital.

According to police, DeAngelo lived in the 10100 block of Reprise Drive.

NBC Washington reports that he attended Rosemont Elementary School, where grief counselors were on hand for students Tuesday.

County officials are warning parents to keep their children away from bodies of water.
