Report: County to Resume Control of Animal Shelter from Humane Society

A new animal shelter facility in Derwood, MD will be staffed by county government employees, not personnel from the Montgomery County Humane Society.

For the first time in 40-plus-years, Montgomery County Police's Animals Services Division will assume control over pet adoptions and licensing for county residents, The Washington Post reports.

The Montgomery County Humane Society has operated the animal shelter in Rockville for the county since the 1960s, according to The Post, but police have a plan to hire a civilian to man the new operations in Derwood. 

“I think we can do things bigger and do things better and be a very progressive shelter,” Police Chief J. Thomas Manger said.
