Report: Suspect In Gaithersburg Hatchet Killing Faces Murder Charge

Gazette: Claude Allen III was formally indicted on a charge of first-degree murder by a grand jury on Thursday.

20-year-old Gaithersburg man who police believe used a hatchet to kill an acquaintance was indicted Thursday on a charge of first-degree murder, The Gazette reported.

Claude A. Allen III was arrested May 24 after calling Montgomery County police early that Friday to report that he killed an intruder who tried to break into his family's home.

No trial date has been set for Allen. His attorney said he would be pleading not guilty, according to the report.

Allen tried to cover up the crime and provided police with at least three different versions of what happened, according to charging documents.
