Council Approves Nearly $40K in Supplemental Funding for Nonprofits, Schools

The Gaithersburg City Council approved a resolution Monday to enter into supplemental agreements with nonprofit agencies and schools for the City of Gaithersburg totaling $39,827 by a vote of 2-1.

The money is to be distributed in three parts: $15,000 to nonprofit RFP contracts, $21,627 to school-based nonprofit youth contracts and $3,200 to Summit Hall Elementary School.

The supplemental funding is in an amendment to the FY2013 budget.

Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney A. Katz said he believed the money would be well spent through multiple city programs.

According to City documents:

• The $15,000 for nonprofit RFP contracts will allow collaboration between the City's Workforce, Job Development and Financial Empowerment – Workforce Solutions Group of Montgomery County and the Spanish Catholic Center.
• The $3,200 for Summit Hall Elementary School will support the school's "READ ABOUT" program and Homework Club.
• The $21,627 in additional funding for school-based nonprofts will be distributed to the following five programs
  • $10,213 to BROTHERS Program – Family Services Inc., bringing total funding to $41,000
  • $1,463 to Early Head Start – Family Services Inc, bringing total funding to $12,750
  • $1,845 to After School Program – Identity Inc., bringing total funding to $14,897
  • $2,813 to Civics Program & Internship – Liberty’s Promise, bringing total funding to $26,100
  • $5,293 to Suspension Program/G-SHARP – Youth Suspension Opportunities Inc., bringing total funding to $26,880.

City Council Vice President Ryan Spiegel and Council member Jud Ashman voted in favor of the resolution while Council member Cathy Drzyzgula opposed.

Council members Henry F. Marraffa, Jr. and Michael A. Sesma were absent.
