Ethics Ordinance

Also on the agenda tonight will be a discussion of the State's new ethics law, enacted in April. The law requires local governments to update their ethics rules.

The law generally requires:

1. Municipalities to adopt conflict of interest and financial disclosure provisions for elected officials that are equivalent to or exceed the State conflict of interest and financial disclosure requirements.

2. Elected officials to file a financial disclosure statement by April 30th of each year.

3. Local ethics commissions to certify to the State Ethics Commission on or before October 1st of each year that the municipality is in compliance with the requirements for elected officials.

The City adopted changes to its election laws earlier this year which preemptively made many of these changes.
