MLK Essay Winners Read Work, Recognized by Council
The essays describe how the winners would continue Martin Luther King Jr's legacy.
Gaithersburg Mayor Sidney Katz presented the winners of the city's 20th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Literary Arts Contest their awards at Tuesday night's mayor and council meeting.
Skyler Thiessen and Sofia Vallone, both 5th graders at Gaithersburg Elementary School, and Quince Orchard High School sophomore Thriyambek Ramachandran read their winning essays at the meeting. The winners were selected out of 76 Gaithersburg students.
The theme of this year's contest was "How will you serve?", and encouraged students to think about how they would work to continue King's legacy. Vallone, for example, said she wanted to be school president and work to encourage racial equality in school, while Ramachandran said he is pursuing a career in journalism.
