Report: Gaithersburg Officials Support Two Plans For MidCounty Highway

A public hearing on the highway will be held Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in Germantown.

The Gaithersburg Mayor and City Council support two of the county's proposed plans to build a new addition to the MidCounty Highway, The Gazette reports.

The county's preferred option would widen the existing highway—Route 124—from four lanes to five lanes from Goshen Road to Montgomery Village Avenue.

Gaithersburg officials debated whether that option, known as Alternative 9, was best suited for the city, according to the report. They also considered Alternative 2, which "would make improvements to 16 intersections, mostly along Md. 355 and the current Midcounty Highway, without building new roads."

Council Member Cathy Drzyzgula said she feels a combination of Alternative 9 and Alternative 2 makes the most sense for the city, because it would address the issue of improvements to Route 355, according to the report.
